Attention Front Range composters! If you are a member of a municipal or third party organic material collection program, there are likely some big changes coming to your green bin starting on April 1st of this year.
Unfortunately, contamination is the biggest program facing the Front Range’s largest composting facility, A1 Organics. This is where all of the green bin material from Denver and many other communities is processed.
The City of Denver, A1 Organics and Eco-Cycle have extensive information on what will and will not be accepted starting next month on their websites. The biggest takeaway is that ONLY food scraps and yard waste will be accepted (with the exception of CMA-certified 3-gallon compostable bags). You will no longer be able to put paper products or BPI-certified compostable products in your green bin.
Greenwashing is a big issue and we never want to contribute to that by telling you that products we offer are compostable when, in fact, they are not accepted in your green bin. Therefore, we will be updating the disposal section of all of our product descriptions to align with the new green bin guidelines.
Sami, one of our founders, will be participating in a composting class throughout the spring and summer and hopes to learn more about the nuances of what “compostable” really means in the context of Colorado’s climate, especially in relation to the products we offer.
